The Union Government has constituted a high-level committee to examine and address “unnatural demographic changes” in the country, particularly those caused by illegal immigration and infiltration.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been pushing strongly on this issue, stating that the government is determined to prevent any artificial changes in India’s demographic profile and will deport every infiltrator.
The committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, will study nationwide population shifts resulting from illegal migration and other unnatural causes. It will focus on threats to national security, social harmony, and tribal communities, especially in border states like Assam, West Bengal, and others.
Key Members of the Committee are: Census Commissioner V.K. Dwivedi; former IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra; retired IPS officer Balaji Srivastava; and Economist Dr. Shamika Ravi
The panel has been tasked with submitting its report within one year.
Addressing the Border Security Force (BSF) earlier, Amit Shah emphasised that a “high-powered demography mission” will identify infiltration routes, settlement patterns, and vulnerable locations to strengthen border security. He made it clear that the government will not allow any conspiracy to change the country’s demography through illegal means.
This move comes amid long-standing concerns over demographic shifts in several border regions. The committee is expected to recommend concrete measures to check illegal immigration while maintaining social balance and national security.
The development is being seen as a significant step by the Centre to tackle a sensitive and complex issue that has political, social, and security implications.
