BREAKING: Gunfire Erupts at White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Trump Evacuated, Modi Decrees Attack
Global leaders quickly condemned the attack. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.”
Panic unfolded Saturday evening at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner after gunfire erupted outside the venue, forcing the evacuation of US President Donald Trump from the Washington Hilton hotel.
According to officials, shots were fired near the ballroom where the high-profile media gala was underway, prompting Secret Service agents to swiftly rush Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and senior cabinet members to safety. All were confirmed unharmed.
Witness footage from inside the venue showed chaos as attendees ducked under tables when gunshots rang out, with shouts of “Get down!” echoing across the room. Heavily armed security personnel quickly surrounded the president and escorted him out.
In a press briefing following the incident, Trump said a heavily armed suspect had attempted to breach a security checkpoint and was “taken down” by Secret Service officers. One officer was shot during the confrontation but survived thanks to a bulletproof vest and is reportedly in good condition.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California. He has been taken into custody and is expected to face federal charges, including use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer. Officials say he appeared to be acting alone.
Trump described the attacker as a “very sick person” and suggested he may have been the intended target. “This is not the first time in recent years that our republic has been threatened by a would-be assassin,” he said, referencing past attempts during his 2024 campaign.
Images shared earlier on Trump’s Truth Social account appeared to show the suspect subdued on the ground, along with surveillance footage of a man running past security before officers opened fire.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about presidential security and political violence in the United States, particularly given previous assassination attempts targeting Trump.
Investigations into the suspect’s motive are ongoing, with federal authorities expected to provide further updates in the coming days.
