Kolkata , 1 June, 2026: Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a major sit-in protest on June 2 at Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Esplanade, Kolkata, against alleged post-poll violence and repeated attacks on TMC leaders.
The announcement comes just days after TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly roughed up by a mob in Sonarpur on May 30. Stones, eggs, shoes, and blows were hurled at him while he was visiting the family of a post-poll violence victim. Abhishek sustained injuries and later alleged it was a “state-sponsored” attack.
Mamata Banerjee has strongly condemned the incidents, describing them as attempts to intimidate the opposition. The party has also accused the BJP of orchestrating attacks on its leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee, who claimed he was assaulted near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly.
TMC workers staged protests across the state on Sunday demanding justice. The party claims homes of TMC leaders are being targeted and looted in several areas.
Mamata’s Protest Plan
The June 2 sit-in will be led by Mamata Banerjee herself. Senior TMC leaders are expected to participate in large numbers. The party aims to highlight what it calls “BJP’s politics of revenge and violence” after losing power in the recent assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the BJP has rejected the allegations, claiming the anger against TMC leaders is a natural public reaction after years of alleged misrule and violence during their regime.
Five people have already been arrested in connection with the attack on Abhishek Banerjee. The political temperature in West Bengal continues to rise as the new government settles in and the opposition intensifies its protests.
