The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday carried out searches at multiple locations in Kashmir as part of an ongoing investigation into a terror-funding case linked to the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI).
The searches were conducted at three locations in Srinagar and Shopian districts, where officials recovered several financial documents and electronic devices suspected to be linked to the activities of JeI and its affiliated trusts and associations in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to official sources, NIA officers searched Darul Uloom Sirajul Uloom, a school located in the Imam Sahib area of Shopian that was declared an “illegal entity” last month.
Searches were also conducted at the residence of former Jamaat-i-Islami chief Shahzada Aurangzeb in Molu Chitragam in Shopian district and at Jamiat ul Banaat, a religious school for girls in Srinagar’s Lal Bazar area.
The federal anti-terror agency has been investigating the separatist and secessionist activities of Jamaat, which has been declared an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The agency said investigations have revealed that Jamaat was allegedly involved in raising funds and supporting terror activities in Kashmir and other parts of the country.
“It was engaged in collecting funds domestically and internationally in the name of donations for charity and welfare activities, such as health and education,” the NIA said in a statement.
“It was diverting such funds towards violent and secessionist activities, and also channelling them to proscribed terrorist organisations such as the Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM) and others through well-organised networks of cadres,” according the NIA.
