Omar calls Shivraj Chouhan true friend of J&K people

By Tehelka Web Desk Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday welcomed Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to Srinagar and described him as a true friend and well-wisher of Jammu and Kashmir during a programme held at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). The event marked the handing over of sanction letters for projects approved under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)-IV (Batch-II) for Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the gathering, Omar said, “I wholeheartedly welcome Shivraj Singh Chouhan to Srinagar and express my gratitude. You have repeatedly demonstrated that you are a true friend and well-wisher of the people of J&K.” Praising Chouhan’s rapport with people, the Chief Minister said, “The affection you have earned as ‘Mama’ is well-deserved and suits you. We have accepted you with the same warmth and trust. You have spared no effort in strengthening our relationship. Your support and commitment towards the development of Jammu & Kashmir are truly commendable.” Omar said that over the last one and a half years, Chouhan had consistently shown sensitivity towards the needs of Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to the Rs 8,000 crore approval, the Chief Minister termed it extraordinary and said such a large sanction in a single phase was significant. He added that the government would ensure speedy implementation of the projects on the ground. He said Jammu and Kashmir’s difficult terrain, scattered population and challenges in hilly areas made road connectivity a transformative measure for people living in remote regions. The Chief Minister said earlier phases of PMGSY had already connected far-flung areas with schools, hospitals, markets and other essential services, while PMGSY-IV would help link the remaining habitations. He also assured that the government would work seriously to implement the approved projects and utilise central assistance and shared contributions effectively to bring tangible improvements in the lives of rural communities, farmers, horticulturists and women associated with Self-Help Groups.
