China and Pakistan have once again referred to the Kashmir issue in a joint statement issued after talks between Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, as Islamabad continued its push to internationalise the matter.
According to the joint statement released by Pakistan’s foreign ministry, the Pakistani side “briefed” the Chinese leadership on the latest developments in Jammu and Kashmir.
The statement said the Chinese side reiterated that the Jammu and Kashmir “dispute is left over from history, and should be properly and peacefully resolved in accordance with the UN Charter, relevant UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.”
The wording of the statement\ closely mirrors the language used in the joint statement issued by the two countries in 2024. That statement had also described the Jammu and Kashmir issue as “left over from history” and called for its peaceful resolution under the framework of the UN Charter.
India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and has rejected third-party involvement in the matter.
